Policies and Procedures/Common questions pertaining to the examinations:

1-Preparing for the comprehensive five home study examination to earn the ATS credential PTCS recommends that you have thoroughly read all material that pertains to the unit as well as study workbook. Each unit examination again is testing your comprehension of that material that you studied. For the five home study comprehensive examination, PTCS recommends that you study 3 months. The examination will possess a heavy emphasis on you having a solid understanding of functional anatomy, biomechanics, biomechanics of movement, periodization training and common dysfunctions of orthopedic, neuromuscular, and special population conditions, and understanding training and programming that is safe and effective based on science and research.

2-What is a passing score? A score of 75% or better is required for a single unit examination or for the comprehensive five-unit examination.

3-How long before I hear my results? As soon as PTCS receives the results, we will notify you by email. Therefore, it is important that you provide PTCS with both your email and phone contact information accordingly.

4-How much time do I have with each examination? Each examination is comprised of 30 questions and you have 60 minutes to complete the examination. The comprehensive five home study examination consists of 125 multiple-choice questions, in which you have three hours to complete the entire examination accordingly. You can take the examination at any time you wish.

5-I purchased more than one unit, can I take both examinations at the same time? No. If you purchased two different courses, you must register a first time, complete the whole registration process, complete the first examination, then repeat the process again at a different time to take the second examination.

6-What happens if I don’t pass? If you do not pass on the first time, PTCS will contact you providing results on how you scored. It is important to learn about your strengths as well as weaknesses. You do have the option to retest, however, will need to pay a retesting fee.
The cost for taking a unit examination retake is $50.00, whereas retaking the comprehensive five unit examination cost is also $50.00 respectively.

If you are going to retest, you must do the following:

1. Email PTCS that you are interested in retesting after receiving feedback.

2. PTCS strongly urges you to consult with Chris Gellert, PT, MMusc & Sportsphysio, MPT, CSCS, AMS and review areas that you think you have concern,
as well as understanding your strengths and weaknesses.

Any additional questions, concerns, please direct them to PTCS through email at ptcg1999@verizon.net and in the subject header write “examination assistance.” Additional help is available in the form of tutoring, however, the amount of help, time that PTCS can provide, depends on several factors. PTCS will discuss these factors with each student and take it on a case by case basis.

Oral and Practical Examination Information

PTCS will provide a live person. PTCS requires you to obtain a history, thoroughly functionally assess them, and then explain your findings.
Based on your findings, the PTCS examiner, will ask you relevant questions that pertain to exercise prescription, programming and periodization training.

Case study examination

PTCS will provide you with three case studies. Each case study is either of a past patient or someone similar. The case study will describe the client, including their past medical
history, exercise history, surgeries, medication taking, and any other relevant information, including personal goals.
PTCS will ask the following:

  • Define the anatomical and functional anatomy involved.
  • Biomechanically describe what is going on at the specific joint when asked.
  • Describe the pathophysiology of the dysfunction the client has(ie. Degenerative disc disease)
  • Defend one functional assessment you would perform and state why
  • Name three static and dynamic core exercises suitable for the patient
  • Define a sample workout(microcycle) for this client, including sets, reps, exercise selection and most importantly defend why.
  • Explain one contraindicated exercise and precautionary exercise base on science, physics or research, not opinion.
